M K Kumar (b. 1977) is a Singapore Literature Prize winner, mainly working in the literary genres of poetry and fiction.
Kumar was born in Theeyathur, India. He completed his diploma in 1995 at the College of Chemical Technology, Chennai. After working for six years in a private company in India, he moved to Singapore in 2001. In 2010, he graduated from the University of Newcastle, Australia, with a degree in Conservation and Environmental Ecology. Kumar currently works as a manager in the environmental sector and has served as an instructor and auditor in the field of construction safety.
Kumar, who developed a passion for literature during his childhood, ran a handwritten journal while in high school. His first short story was published in 2003. His works have since appeared in various online and print publications, including Kalachuvadu (India), The Serangoon Times (Singapore), and Vallinam (Malaysia). He has published several short story collections since 2006. His debut poetry collection was released in 2013, and, in 2015, he compiled and published a collection of poems by Singaporean women poets.
M K Kumar’s short story “5:12 P.M.” was included in the Tamil short story anthology published by the Sahitya Akademi, India’s National Academy of Letters, an institution dedicated to promoting literature in various Indian languages and honouring literary excellence, in 2015. He has received several accolades, including the Kannadasan Award (2017) from the Association of Singapore Tamil Writers and the Singapore Literature Prize (2018) awarded by the Singapore Book Council.
