Sushma Soma (b. 1987) is a recipient of the Young Artist Award, the highest honour for young arts practitioners in Singapore. Although trained as a Chartered Accountant, she has devoted much of her postgraduate life to the practice and promotion of Carnatic music, both in Singapore and internationally.
From a young age, Sushma had studied music at the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society. After completing her Bachelor of Accountancy degree at Nanyang Technological University and working at one of the leading accounting firms for some time, she chose to move to India to pursue advanced training in Carnatic music and is currently mentored by renowned violinist and musicologist, RK Shriramkumar.
As both collaborator and soloist, Sushma has performed in some renowned stages and festivals, including The Esplanade Theatres by the Bay in Singapore, The Earthshot Prize Awards, the Music Academy in Chennai, and the Mahindra Kabira Festival in Varanasi. She has collaborated with prominent classical dancer Mythili Prakash at the Festival in Motion during FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and also performed at the Reflektor Festival, curated by the world-famous Anoushka Shankar at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.
Her album, HOME, created in collaboration with American composer and musician Aditya Prakash, received critical acclaim. Reviewed as “One of the finest albums about environment and wildlife…”, tracks from HOME also featured in BBC Radio, SONGLiNES Magazine, Rolling Stone India and NHK Japan. The piece ‘The Elephant’s Funeral’ was ranked as one of the top five songs of 2022 by The Indian Express.
Beyond her performance career, Sushma works as a part-time Lecturer at the National Institute of Education in Singapore and is a member of the advisory panel for the Singapore International Festival of Arts. In 2018, she led the development of the Digital Archive of Singapore Tamil Music in collaboration with the Tamil Digital Heritage Group, the predecessor of the Centre for Singapore Tamil Culture. In 2020, Sushma was given the Young Artist Award by the government in recognition of her exceptional talent and service to the community.
