Parrot Astrologers

Parrot astrology is a traditional form of fortune-telling in which a parrot, typically a parakeet, selects a tarot-like fortune card that the fortune teller interprets. This practice traces its roots to South India, particularly Tamil Nadu, and was introduced to Singapore through Tamil migration. By the late 19th century, parrot astrologers had become a familiar sight along Serangoon Road and its surrounding areas.

Initially catering to the needs of working-class Tamil immigrants, parrot astrologers gradually gained popularity across other communities as they spread beyond Little India. Their services were frequently sought for personal guidance and for determining auspicious dates for significant events, such as weddings and business inaugurations.

The five-footway served as the primary setting for parrot astrologers to conduct their business. Almost always men, they typically dressed in white dhotis and shirts, their foreheads adorned with holy ash or vermilion, bringing a sense of tradition and mystique to their craft. Their workday often began early in the morning and ended around dusk, and they charged $1 for a reading, earning about $15 per day.

Many patrons of parrot astrologers were intrigued by the role of the parrots in the practice and the seemingly intelligible communication between bird and man. Although many Tamils remain interested in astrology, the belief in this traditional form has declined significantly over time. The number of parrot astrologers in Singapore steadily decreased as well, marking the fading presence of a once-common cultural tradition.

Selvaraju Muniyandi, reportedly Singapore’s last remaining parrot astrologer, offers ad-hoc readings in public and personalised sessions for regular customers at his home. Event organisers also seek his services to add a touch of tradition to their occasions.
