Join Yong Shu Hoong as he celebrates the 21st anniversary of Isaac, his first collection of poetry. Originally published by Firstfruits Publications in 1997, Isaac documents his encounters and observations in America and Singapore, before shifting the focus closer to home.
Shu Hoong will be sharing a display of handwritten early drafts as well as a rare book of paintings paired with poems from Isaac. After the session, there will be a tour of Impressions of Nature, a showcase of the National Library’s Arts collection.
About the Speaker
Yong Shu Hoong is the author of six poetry collections, including Frottage (2005), The Viewing Party (2013), which both won the Singapore Literature Prize, and Right of the Soil (2018). His poems and short stories have been published in Quarterly Literary Review Singapore and Asia Literary Review (Hong Kong), as well as anthologies such as Language for a New Century (W.W. Norton, 2008).
About The Arts Space
Nestled within Level 8 of the National Library is the Arts Space, a cosy corner reimagined to bring our rich arts collection to life. Featuring carefully curated reads, the Arts Space is a place where all are welcome to reflect, explore and create.
The 2nd season of The Arts Space – Impressions of Nature – is a thematic display of paintings and resources from our collection. Having explored Singapore’s built streetscapes in the first season, we return to nature through three trails: Across the Lands, For the Love of Flora and Nature in Abstract. Explore the beauty and moments in nature as captured by artists, poets and performers this season.
