Inter Library Loan

The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is the loan of materials between libraries. The National Library Singapore facilitates loan requests for books and materials from overseas libraries that are not available in our collections. All costs such as shipping fees are borne by the requestor.

Institutional Membership is available for organisations who wish to borrow from the Reference or Lending collection of the National Library Board (NLB) through the Interlibrary Loan.

Eligibility Categories

  • Libraries in Singapore who are members of the Library Association of Singapore (LAS)
  • Public Sector agencies such as Singapore Government Ministries and Statutory Boards
  • Non-library and private institutions requests (subject to approval by NLB)

Membership Overview 

  • Each member is entitled to one membership card that must be presented when collecting items. 
  • Members may borrow a maximum of 20 items for 7 days (Reference collection) or 21 days (Lending collection).
  • The standard fees and fines shall apply.

Items not available for loan but for on-site consultation

  • Autographed books, donors' collections, manuscripts, rare books and items in fragile condition;
  • Microfilms, ephemera and loose leaf items;
  • Reference journals, annuals, proceedings, society transactions and other serials Encyclopaedias, latest yearbooks and annual reports;
  • Reference CD-ROMS; and
  • PublicationSG materials.

Postage Costs

  • Postage and other applicable third party charges shall be borne by the requestor.
