NLB and French Embassy launch Diard and Duvaucel book on French Natural History Drawings of Singapore and Southeast Asia

New Book on Natural History Drawings of Singapore and Southeast Asia launched by NLB and French Embassy

In 1818, two young French naturalists, Pierre-Médard Diard and Alfred Duvaucel, were recruited by Stamford Raffles to collect specimens in Singapore and the surrounding region. Diard and Duvaucel worked with local artists to create drawings of animals and plants they had collected, and sent these to scientists back home in France. The set of 117 drawings, whose digitised copies are held by Singapore’s National Library, are prized for their scientific and aesthetic value.

The newly launched book Diard & Duvaucel showcases the stunning, lifelike illustrations with text in English and French. It is the result of a collaboration between the Embassy of France and the National Library of Singapore, in partnership with Epigram Books, the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle and TotalEnergies.
