Role of Boards in Managing Risks

Introduction

In an increasingly vulnerable economic and social landscape, non-profit organisations (NPOs) and Volunteer Welfare Organisations (VWOs) are now playing a greater role in plugging social gaps, addressing social problems and meeting the needs of the under-served customer segments. Because of the trust that are placed on NPOs and VWOs, their Boards are expected to govern effectively and maintain credibility by:

  • Establishing an effective risk governance and management framework.
  • Maintaining higher ethical standards and win the trust and respect from donors, government and society for funding sustainability.
  • Implementing controls to mitigate fraud risk and conduct grant programmes in accordance to grant conditions for donors and sponsors.
  • Placing a risk management process to identify and mitigate operational risks related to programme events, volunteers and staffing which impacts the welfare of beneficiaries.
  • Protecting the confidentiality of information provided by donors and mitigate leakage risks.

They say to today’s leaders that chief executives must run the corporation and directors lead the corporation on the most crucial issues such as monitoring, governance and rebalance the responsibilities of the board. They offer a new roadmap both to CEOs and directors so that senior executives can better balance board oversight with their day-to-day operations of the firm and directors have a better understanding of when to lead, when to partner and when to stay out of the way.

Each of the ten chapters in the book opens with a framing essay that identifies the central theme and issues and summarises the significance of the contribution that each piece makes to the development of knowledge in the field. Includes new articles on legal frameworks, philanthropy, managing volunteers and accountability, as well as an essay on capacity building.

    This book addresses the need for organisations to manage risks in order to maximise business strategies and achieve long term goals. Based on ISO 31000 and applying current best practice, it provides templates and examples that can be adapted for any industry. Breaking down the theory on enterprise risk management, it helps to see risk as both an opportunity and a threat whilst giving guidance on how to implement it. It provides models for Risk Adjusted Return on Capital to evaluate R.O.I and measure performance, advice on emergent risks, as well as best practice and advice on risk communication, transparency and brand protection.

    The book examines the management of social purpose-driven organisations in an Asian context, using the case study approach. It looks at organisations such as National Kidney Foundation, Asian Women’s Welfare Organisation, Mercy Relief, Singapore Chinese Orchestra and NTUC Eldercare Co-operative during a period of major changes in the regulatory and governance environment for charities in Singapore.

You can search the library catalogue (for physical materials) in the library and from home (http://catalogue.nlb.gov.sg). The easy search function allows you to search/browse by author, title, keyword, subject and ISBN/ISSN whereas the advanced search allows you to narrow your searches to specific media types or language holdings. In both instances, you will also be able to limit your search to search only specific libraries by clicking on the “limit by branch” option.

If you wish to search for only materials available in the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library, please always click on the “Limit by Branch” button at the bottom of the page, after you have keyed in your search term. This brings you to a new page whereby you will be able to select the library of your choice. Choose “Lee Kong Chian Reference Library” and select “yes” under the “Display only items available in the selected branch below” and then click on search.

Things to note: 
Once you have identified the title that you need, please double check through the following information and write down the necessary info:

i. The “Status” of the item: the item isnot availablein the library, if the status displayed is “in transit”, “in process” or “not ready for loan”.
ii. Double check that the item is in Lee Kong Chian Reference Library under “Branch”.
