"The Help" by Kathryn Stockett
‘The Help’ by Kathryn Stockett (Call No.: STO) writes on 3 women, Aibileen, Minny, and Miss Skeeters.

Aibileen, a loving maternal, had just lost her son. It was Minny who took care of her and it was months before Aibileen came out from the loss. She works in Miss Leefolt’s house and takes care of her baby, Mae Mobley. Minny is Aibileen’s best friend. She, too, works as a maid and is often treated as a thief by her employer, Miss Hilly. While Minny is a wonderful cook, she can’t mind her tongue, costing her job. Through their working experience, they both shed light of the black maids working in middle class white family.

Miss Skeeters is a friend of Miss Leefolt. She is different from the white ladies. At twenty-two, she is not getting married when she should be and holds a degree. She becomes interested in the plight of the black maids and writes about their stories and sufferings.

The story is made into a movie in 2011. The actress is nominated for Academy Award. This book is selected as part of the READ Singapore 2012 initiative.
