What Did Raffles See in Singapore?
Apart from an idyllic fishing village, what greeted Raffles, Farquhar and the early European pioneers when they landed in Singapore? Examining the few extant historical sources and clues from archaeological remains, this talk investigates what Singapore was like before and after Raffles’ arrival.

About the speaker:
Lim Chen Sian is currently Visiting Research Fellow with the Archaeology Unit, Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. Over the past decade he was extensively involved in salvage excavation projects in Singapore, leading all the major digs since 2006.

This talk is the fifth in a series of public talks for the Raffles' Letters: Intrigues behind the Founding of Singapore exhibition.
