Be InfoSmart presents: “Telling Singapore Ghost Stories”
Ghost stories have played an integral part of many aspects of our lives: told during our childhood days in hushed tones by parents and grandparents; stories of haunted toilets in schools; the sighting of Japanese soldiers in particular war-torn buildings; late-night noises in offices heard way past working hours; cab drivers picking up 'strange' passengers at deserted bus-stops. These stories have been told and retold through different scenarios and characters, and yet, often, aims to relay the same cautionary tale, in that, these ghost stories are meant to warn or remind us of something. What are they? In unpacking the symbolisms behind these ghost stories, we begin by looking at the different ghostly bodies, as well as the ways in which we experience them – through sight and ‘feel’ – and in doing so, perhaps, enable an understanding of why we tell ghost stories in Singapore.
