“Trees for Life” Art Exhibition
Trees are not just trees. Trees are for Life.
Can you imagine a world without trees? A stroll in the park would be incomplete without enjoying the cool shade of trees. Many birds, small mammals and insects would lose their cosy homes. Some epiphytic plants like ferns and orchids may even cease to exist without the support from trees.
With this concept in mind, the “Trees for Life” Art Competition 2012 was conceived. Held from 2 January to 9 March 2012, the art Competition received more than 2, 500 entries from children and youths from preschool, primary school and secondary school categories. Their paintings offer a fresh and creative take of the importance of trees and how they are intertwined with our lives.
The paintings underwent several rounds of selections by renowned nature artists before a total of 31 winners emerged. View the winning art pieces at the following venues and be inspired to love the beautiful trees of our City in a Garden:

(1) Heritage Trees of Singapore
Saturday, 21 July, 3.00-4.00pm, Programme Zone, Jurong West Public Library
In conjunction with the “Trees for Life” Art Exhibition held in Jurong West Public Library from 21 July to 12 August 2012, join us for a talk about the Heritage Trees of Singapore. These are trees of special historical, botanical, social, cultural and/or aesthetic value in society. Through this talk, learn interesting facts about some of these majestic trees which represent the rich natural heritage of Singapore and our roots as a tropical rainforest.
More about the speaker
Brendon Phuah enjoys learning about tree species and discovering mature trees in Singapore with the potential to be Heritage Trees. A part of his job scope includes working with the Heritage Tree Secretariat and maintaining the Heritage Trees web pages on the NParks website. He is a Senior Officer with the Horticulture and Community Gardening Division, National Parks Board and a Certified Arborist (Intenational Society of Arboriculture).
(2) “Trees for Life” Workshop: Trees–The Giants Around Us
Saturday, 28 July 2012, 3.00-4.00pm, Programme Zone, Jurong West Public Library
In conjunction with the “Trees for Life” Art Exhibition held in Jurong West Public Library from 21 July to 12 August 2012, join us for a fun workshop where parents and children will get acquainted with the common trees of Singapore. Not only will they learn to recognize the trees, participants will also take part in an art and craft activity to reinforce their knowledge about these majestic giants in our midst.
This talk is recommended for parents and children.
