Born in 1942, Professor Phua Kok Khoo is the Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of World Scientific Publishing, which he and his wife Doreen Liu started. He was educated at Imperial College and the University of Birmingham, where he read Mathematical Physics. He is the Founding Director of the Institute of Advanced Studies at Nanyang Technological University. Formerly a teaching staff at the National University of Singapore (NUS), he eventually left to join the publishing industry full-time, but remains an honorary adjunct professor at NUS. He was awarded the IPS President’s Award by the institute of Physics Singapore (IPS) Council, for his outstanding contributions to physics research and education in Singapore in 2006. Professor Phua comes from a family of publishers. His father, Phua Chye Long/Phua Chay Leong (潘醒农) (1904-1987), was a prominent Chinese writer and owner of a Chinese publishing business. His donated items to the National Library comprise a number of original manuscripts penned by either his late father or other Chinese authors like Xu Yunqiao (许云樵) (1905-1981). These date from the 1950s to 1960s.
