Esplanade’s Baybeats 2013 (28 to 30 June)

baybeats2013

Baybeats, Esplanade’s alternative music festival featuring Asian bands, is back again for the 12th year from 28-30 June (Fri-Sun). Launched in 2002, the festival features performing genres such as folk, pop, metal, post-rock, emo and punk; and less-known alternative genres including grindcore, progressive metalcore, dreampop and acoustic blue grass.

Over the three-day festival, Baybeats 2013 will present 35 bands (21 acts from Singapore and 14 from Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Australia) performing a grand total of 54 non-ticketed shows. Thirty bands will be playing in Baybeats for the first time, true to the festival‘s vision of introducing fresh acts to its audience.

Among the highlights are indie heavyweight Electrico, Force Vomit, which took a hiatus since 2009, and Wormrot which was formed in 2007. The gigs of these local boys had taken them across the United States, Europe, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Vietnam and Thailand.

Furthermore, there is Asian Chairshot, whose music is recently used in an iPad advertisement in Korea. Save Me Hollywood, a rock and punk band whose singles We Are One Tonight and Reckless are currently ripping through the Filipino radio charts. Not forgetting Hightime Rebellion, which hails from Indonesia, will present its psychedelic blend of pop, funk, rock and baseline of dance music, perfected with the sultry voice of its female vocalist Miyane Soemitro.

Baybeats also provides the platform for homegrown talents to reach out to a wider audience with the best of this year’s auditions featuring 7nightsatsea, Dropbeat Heartbeat, Dyeth, Enesya, Mannequins, Monsters in Living Flesh and sub:shaman.

Besides performances you can also head on down to the Festival Village where local vendors and indie crafters ply their wares to the crowd or the library for a chat with the artists at the Observation Deck.
